COMMUNITY POLICY

Why do we have this?

IsGood Woodworks is dedicated to the sharing of resources of all kinds: Our collective knowledge, our facility, our tools, and our common cultural practices in how we use well designed interdependent systems to stay on the same page and maximize the usefulness of our collective resources. If you are new here, you will need to know the details. There is no strict formality here, just common sense. A lot of what you see here is excerpted from the Shop Members Terms of Use, in less formal terms.

Common courtesy

After you have finished your work at a piece of equipment, brush off the tool surfaces, dispose of fall down and sweep the floor around the piece of equipment No need to clean up the ambient mess that seems to come from nowhere: we do the overall cleaning. DO pick up any saw dust or shavings that obviously came from work you have just completed. Restore the default settings. We will have to teach you what those defaults are as you progress in your shop work.

If you fill a trash can completely with your own work, please empty it. We will show you where.

Each time you use a tool with dust collection, check the dust collector and empty it if it is full or near full. You may ask us to empty it if your dust creation is minor. LET US KNOW. Also check when you are through, and empty it if it is full then. If you are producing a great deal of shavings keep an eye on it as you work.

Enjoy the lack of obstacles when you move to a new machine in your work

Keep it organized

Materials and constructed elements may be stored for a period of time without activity AS POSTED AT OR NEAR THE WORK IN PROGRESS STORAGE AREAS. A label provided by IsGood with your name, the date of storage from the time of  most recent shop use, and the your phone number MUST BE ATTACHED. In the event that the label is missing, or the allowed period of storage is expired, said work in progress will be subject to removal or disposal WITHOUT NOTIFICATION. THERE IS NO AVAILABLE STORAGE FOR MATERIALS THAT ARE NOT PART OF A CURRENT PROJECT

Storage locations are based on the idea that materials best fit in a similar size and shape bin, rack, or shelf. This means that your project materials may be stored in several locations. This allows us to have room for much more project material. A rack for tall material is not a good place to put short pieces.

We have leaning signs designating all the project storage areas, and signs for materials stashes that are up for grabs

The small carts with the removable tops and the dowel holes are intended primarily for dressing lumber. Please do not use them for storing sheet goods or other materials that can as easily be stored on a dolly or low cart.

Please make use of all the resources offered

We have a small library of hand tools dedicated for community use and John’s large set of personal tools are available by permission. You should ask, or let John know you have them. Tools that John loans ARE NOT TO BE PUT AWAY BY YOU- instead, return them but leave them OUT in John’s private work area. John will put them away.

You are welcome to use any our our supplies and hardware that we keep on the shop floor. You do not need to shop for and bring multiple small packages of such things as screws or glue. You do not need to ask, and you do not get to take them all. If you need a lot, we likely have back stock we can sell you and save you a trip
